Are automated and manual trading systems very different?

I’m trying to understand the difference between manual trading strategies and automated trading systems. From what I’ve read, a manual trader can still follow a very specific set of rules, while an automated system can execute those rules without requiring the trader to place every order personally. That makes me wonder where the real difference is. Is it mainly about execution, or are automated systems generally designed around completely different strategies? I’m asking because I’d like to understand the concept before looking at specific software. Some of the descriptions online use technical terminology that makes it sound more complicated than it probably is. Any straightforward explanation or resource would be appreciated.

The distinction is often more about how the rules are applied than about the strategy itself. You can learn more about the broader topic through this overview of trading systems. A manual trader might follow a checklist or predefined strategy but make the final decisions and execute trades personally. An automated system can apply programmed rules and handle certain actions automatically. That doesn’t necessarily mean the underlying strategy is better or worse. When comparing systems, I’d focus on what the rules actually are, how they respond to different market conditions, what controls are available and how the system has been tested. Automation can reduce repetitive work, but it doesn’t eliminate the need to understand and monitor the strategy.
